First things first: By not trying too hard. We’re doing this for us, there is no price, it’s not a race. And we can’t always be happy, experience extraordinary things and be overwhelmed by a wave of positive energy. I don’t believe anybody who pretends to be permanently happy, everybody has their dark moments, some darker than others and some people may be able to deal with these better than others (or are better in hiding them), but we certainly aren’t constantly happy. I prefer not to have resolutions for the coming 12 or so months starting with the new year as these are often tainted by (let’s face it) a drink or two, the afterglow of Christmas, and peer pressure.
I think we often make resolutions for the coming months when we ‘reboot’, maybe that’s after our summer holidays or any other longer break. If the reboot happens to coincide with the new year, so be it. Such resolutions may not be for 12 months, and that’s fine too. I like a mix of small, do-able (sustainable) goals and some aspirational goals that are more like projects and will require some research. We all get excited about a little bit of snow (especially in Ireland where this is so rare) and probably find it amusing that people sometimes assume all of Europe will be covered by a blanket of snow over the winter months. A nice breakfast is one of the few ways to help us (me in particular) get out of bed in the morning, especially in the winter when getting up is a hundred times more difficult. And of course it’s a good way to get set up for the day. What better than to have brunch with friends or a relaxed breakfast on a lazy weekend morning? Most of us have good intentions to live more sustainably but at least for me they are often difficult to implement. Small changes can make a big difference and are a lot easier to maintain than radical changes; so here topics I want to think about more in depth to make better choices in the future. It’s simple but beating a habit is tricky, especially if it involves making once own’s choices and versus the barrage of advertising we are fed with on a daily basis.
